The most important thing that you can do prior to a massage is prepare to relax. There are several things that the American Massage Therapy Association feels can help you to mentally and physically get ready for your treatment.
Take a shower, a soak in a hot tub or even just a cat bath with a wash cloth in strategic areas (think what might stink….) The warm water will help your muscles begin to relax. Also both you and your therapist will be more comfortable if you are clean. And who wants to be distracted in the middle of a massage with the thought that their feet might smell?
Eat only a light meal before treatment. One of the benefits of massage is an increase in circulation. Your digestive system will not be able to properly digest a heavy meal if the blood is being redirected away from it.
Drink some water or preferably warm tea before the treatment.
Visit the restroom after drinking the aforementioned water or tea. You are more than welcome to say that you need to use the restroom during your treatment but if it can be avoided that is best.
Don’t wear lots of lotions or makeup. If you are heading somewhere directly after the session, bring a few toiletries to freshen up after the treatment. That way you won’t leave most of your make up and lotion on the massage sheets.
Wear comfortable clothing – for example what you might wear to the gym or a yoga class is perfect. This will allow you to be relaxed on the way into the massage and also on the way out.
Be a bit early. It will take even longer to begin to relax if you are in a frenzied rush to get to your appointment. Also if it is your first visit, there will be some paperwork to fill out first. If you are late for your session, the massage therapist will do the best they can to give you as much treatment time as possible but they need to keep to their schedule out of respect for the subsequent clients.
Communicate with your therapist. Make sure that you clearly identify your goals for the session to your therapist so that they know where to focus extra attention.
By following just a few tips, you will get the absolute most out of your treatment time. Now take a deep breath and prepare to relax!
